Making homemade foam armor - out of what?

I am looking to make Gears of War style armor over the summer, but I'm not sure what to make it out of. The idea is to make it so that I can play airsoft in it with friends, and not have it puncture. Can anyone point me towards a material to use that is cheap? Also, is there a kind of finish that will create a plastic-y shell around the material?

You could buy Camp Pads (the blue rolls) at any Wal-Martesque store. That is fairly mailible and you can cut it and form it as you want. If you get spray adhesive, it should hold together well, and then you could layer it as you like, making it thicker in areas you want to protect more, and thinner and more flexable in the joints and whatnot. You could also start strapping some of them together with those adjustable straps that they put on backpacks and what not. You can get those at any kind of craft store (Wal-Mart, Jo-Annes, Micheal's).

As for a shell, that is going to cost you more then likely. You might want to look into fabric or spray plastic of somekind. maybe something they use airplanes to make bodies...
